The unofficial propellerhead reason tutorial site
Trance music is probably one of the easiest form of House music to explain, since trance is kind of being based on a set of rules one can follow to call it a trance song. Since the beginning of trance, most trance music pieces were pretty much straight forward in a way, and most likely most trance songs look 'alike'. This is probably also one of the reasons why the genre trance has kind of died out since 2006, where the high peak of trance was from 2001 till 2003. After the year 2006 an off spin was created called "Progressive Trance". Where trance was more based on a set off rules, the genre progressive trance was meant to unbound those rules, yet take some stuff from the music genre trance while still creating its own form. In this Reason tutorial I will ...

Right, this weekend has been a glitchy weekend more or less. At least, I worked on this combinator patch once, where I basicly used triggers (keys) to add delays and throw in all sorts of effects on top of that. Even while there is production wise a very easy method to get this one done, but in a live set it would be a bit more tricky to get it done (hence the whole triggering keys part). Anyways, the whole idea I had in mind kind of was similar as an approach I did with the WIP I posted last week WipeOut 2011 part 4 Wip by Earmassage Yeah, that one... The difference here with the other takes is that alot of stuff is being processed by using LFOs or Modulators from the Maelstrom. By using edit automation on some portions on this effect processor (yeah, i could ...

While I personally don't think I am an expert on creating orchestral pieces, I might want to add that I however did a lot of research on how orchestra works in a way in 2006. This all started with listening and re-arranging the complete Final Fantasy 7 music series. By re-arranging those songs I have learned so much from it by then I think I might even be up to the challenge on making a complete tutorial about how to set a complete orchestra up inside propellerhead reason 4. I will also point out some general stuff about what orchestral music is all about. Just to show visually what we are dealing with over here I will start of showing 2 different pictures before we get started: One thing you will notice is that the position of each set of instrument might be a ...

Before I am going to start off, let me just say this is a Propellerhead reason 4 tutorial, all these example files in RNS format will not work inside propellerhead Reason 3. However, some of the techniques that are being discussed can also apply to older versions of propellerhead reason. The basics of Drum and Bass The easiest way to explain what drum and bass is all about is by looking at the name of the genre and think about it... It has 2 different words in them, and that should give some clue on what drum and bass is all about. In this tutorial I will give some more indepth information on how to setup a Drum and Bass track. Most of the stuff you will probably have to figure out yourself, since it comes to your own experience and inspiration to start creating Drum and bass ...

so far I we have covered most of it from it when it comes to the basic idea of drumming of Breakcore. Lets take a look at some other factors that come to play. Basslines, leads, effects... the works! Basslines IDM'ish When it comes to basslines, one could use a lot of stuff that is comming from the Drum and Bass scene. Since IDM Breakcore is an offspring of Drum and Bass, yet most of the difference lies within the breaking of the drums, the glitched out sounds and the effects. If you really want to go 'hardcore' IDM'ish, you even want to make some really 'weird' kind of like "hey look I am on LSD" kind of sound effects. This is probably not for the masses, and that is probably why the hardcore IDM tracks are most often found "annoying" to say the least. However, some ...

As I showed with the previous part how to setup all kinds of different gltiched or pitching techniques. There is one method I left out. And that is the dual speed or quad speed increased method. At least, thats how I will call it right now. One minor problem Propellerhead Reason has is setting up those really short notes, which are for breakcore a must have to do... As you would look up the default setup it will load up the following note lengths by default: These are the basic note lengths, and in most cases there is one minor excpetion with this one, and that is the 1/128 note length. Since this one can be found in the Matrix pattern Sequencer, the Arpegiator or redrum (which is called Resolution or note length). However, there is no way (by default) to setup a note length below ...

IDM Breakcore is an offspring of Jungle and Drum and Bass. And the thing that distincts Drum and Bass and BreakCore is the whole usage of pitch changes, glitch effects and really short notes. The sequencer of propellerhead reason is rather limited in a way when it comes to making these really short notes though. At least if you take the drop down menu where you can select the length of the notes, the shortest notes you can manually create are 1/64 notes. The matrix pattern sequencer, or the RPG-8 Arpeggiator have the option to make 1/128 notes. To make something IDM BreakCore-ish, one might want to use really short notes to start with. 1/256 notes are not an exception here. I'll will go more in depth about that whole part in the next part. But first, lets start of with the very basics ...

Setting up a goa trance bassline
Welcome back to another reason tutorial. In this tutorial we'll be perfoming a few GOA like trance tracks. And personally I am in favor of the old school Astral Projection, so in this case most of the stuff I will be typing about is that specific style. The Combinator (Propellerhead Reason 3)
The combinator was brought to life in Propellerhead Reason 3.0. While most people are sceptic about the combinator, because it only 'combines' devices and is not really a special device, I personally agred with those people in the beginning. Since without the combinator you can create the same things. Yet, on the other hand, the combinator does make things a lot easier to create your ...

Short tutorial about malstrom filters used by other devices in Reason
One trick I just figured out is that the Filter A and Filter B of the malstrom device can be used by other devices. With that being said, we can also use the Combi Filter on other devices as we see fit! To establish this we have to check the rear of the Malstrom. And this looks like this: I have parked a rectangle around the part in what is of interest. Since this is a audio Input thing we ...
